How Hurricanes Are Ranked:

Category 1 is wind between 74-95 mph
Category 2 is wind between 86-110 mph
Category 3 is wind between 111-130 mph*
Category 4 is wind between 131-155 mph*
Category 5 is wind at 156 mph or higher*

*Categories 3, 4 and 5 are identified as major hurricanes.


Prepare Your Home:

Remove outdoor items
Trim dead branches on your trees
Board up windows
Fill gas tanks and containers
Get extra cash and store it safely
Move furniture away from windows
Store important documents in a waterproof container and/or plastic zipper bag


Create A Hurricane Kit:

Battery operated radio, lanterns, and clock
Candles and matches
Flashlights
Batteries of all sizes
First aid kit
Rain gear
Duct tape
Clean clothes and blankets
Plastic trash bags
Fire extinguisher
Scissors
Can opener
Heavy gloves


Food and Water:

Pack 3 to 7 days worth of non-perishable food per person
Bottled water - enough for one gallon per person each day
Bottled juice
Two coolers - one for food, one for drinks
Manual can opener
Dry pet food
