Make Time for Reading

By Sponsored Content by Oyster October 22, 2014
As we settle back into our busy school routines, it can be hard to make time for kids to sit down with a book between soccer practice, piano lessons, and homework. But studies show that reading with our kids is one of the most important activities we do. For example, according to a Department of Education analysis, kindergartners “who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading than children read to less.”

That’s why we love Oyster, a beautifully-designed app for iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Kindle Fire, and Nook HD. A $9.95 monthly subscription gives you unlimited access to over 35,000 children’s titles that you can read with your kids at bedtime—or pass your tablet to your independent reader when you’re on the go, as a great alternative to a tv show or game.

Some books we’re enjoying include:
Ramona Quimby, Age 8, by Beverly Cleary
There’s no other eight-year-old like Ramona, who takes on the challenges of growing up with spirit. Guaranteed to make hard-boiled eggs a favorite!

The Borrowers, by Mary Norton
Let your kids in on the secret of where all of your missing safety pins, socks, and buttons end up with this perfect bedtime read-aloud.

A Series of Unfortunate Events #1: The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket
This page-turner—the first in a 13-book series—will keep pre-teens on the edges of their seats.

Oh, did we mention? For Mom and Dad, there are also hundreds of thousands of grown-up books and bestsellers with more added each week. So don’t forget to reclaim that iPad after bedtime!
